Aliza Schulman, LCSW's style
💙 Warm 😃 Humorous 💪 Challenging 🙏 SpiritualWhy Aliza Schulman, LCSW chose to be in the helping profession
I was the person everyone would always go to with their issues. People trusted me, wanted my advice, and often told me that I was warm and a good listener. Over time, I began to realize that these were qualities I genuinely valued and that I wanted to build my work around being there for people in a meaningful way.
I have also always been fascinated by psychology, including my own psychology, my thoughts, my behavior, my motivations, and why I do the things I do or feel the things I feel. I am just as fascinated by understanding why other people feel the things they feel and do the things they do. When I am working with someone, I often find myself in a kind of flow, almost a meditative state, where I can really focus on the person in front of me. I try as much as I can to help them develop a deeper sense of their own world and what they are experiencing, because I believe that understanding that experience is one of the best ways I can be of help to them.
Aliza Schulman, LCSW's approach
My approach is very individual. I conceptualize the case using psychoanalytic and psychodynamic principles, but when it comes to the actual work we do together, I want to understand what the client wants and where I think they are at that point in their life. Therapy is a process that we do together, rather than something I simply do to or for someone.
I want to know from my clients what feels helpful to them and what does not. Some people want more practical things, while others want to spend more time understanding what is happening underneath the surface. I am very interested in having my clients give me feedback about what works for them and what does not work for them, so I can custom tailor the therapy to the individual. The goal is to create a process that feels useful, meaningful, and right for the person sitting across from me.
What you can expect from sessions with Aliza Schulman, LCSW
I bring warmth, humor, encouragement, and, when appropriate, some practical advice into my work. I also want to help people gain insight into why they do or feel what they do, and to explore different ways of thinking about and looking at things. Sometimes that means asking challenging questions, sometimes it means using behavioral approaches, and sometimes it simply means creating enough space for someone to understand themselves in a new way.
Every person and every situation is different, so I do not believe there is one way therapy should look. Very often, there is also a spiritual piece to the work, depending on the person and what is meaningful to them. My hope is that clients feel both understood and encouraged, while also having the opportunity to challenge themselves, gain insight, and find new ways of approaching the things they are struggling with.
Aliza Schulman, LCSW's experience working with the Jewish community
I have been working in this field for more than 30 years, and over that time I have had the opportunity to work with people from an incredibly wide range of backgrounds and communities. I work with everyone from Chassidim and Litvaks to Modern Orthodox and people who are not religious, as well as LGBTQ clients. I have worked with people from many different Jewish communities, including Chabad, and I value the opportunity to meet each person where they are.
That range of experience has taught me that there is no single way to understand a person or their world. Each individual brings their own background, experiences, beliefs, relationships, and way of seeing things into the room. After more than three decades of doing this work, I continue to find meaning in getting to know each person as an individual and trying to understand their particular world so that I can be of genuine help.
