Why Avigail Teiler, LMSW chose to be in the helping profession

Honoring my 4-year-old self’s dream of becoming a “complaining doctor” has been a wonderfully humbling and fulfilling experience. This field of work feels intrinsic to my nature and has been a life-long aspiration. Yet, my passion for it has only deepened through my personal life story and is strengthened every day as I witness my beautiful clients’ individual journeys.

I have always felt that I was given the gift of healing, and I believe I must use it to make a difference in people's lives. The connection I feel with my purpose grows stronger with each passing day, as I see the transformations in those I am privileged to help.

Seeing my clients overcome their struggles, achieve their goals, and blossom into their fullest selves brings me immense joy. Every session is a reminder of the profound impact that compassionate, dedicated care can have. This work is more than a profession to me; it is a calling that resonates deeply within my soul. The privilege of walking alongside my clients on their unique journeys continually reaffirms my commitment to this path.

I love what I do, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such significant and meaningful work. My dedication to the helping profession is not just about fulfilling a childhood dream but about making a real, tangible difference in the lives of others. Each day, I strive to honor the gift of healing that I have been blessed with, and I am continually inspired by the resilience and courage of those I serve.

Avigail Teiler, LMSW's approach

As a trauma-informed, psychodynamic therapist, I place a strong emphasis on attachment styles and inner child work. I recognize that each person is unique, and while I specialize in these areas, I consider myself eclectic in my therapeutic approach. Balancing a focus on both the past and the present is essential; concentrating solely on one without the other is like performing surgery without a bandage or using a bandage without surgery—neither approach is effective on its own. Therefore, we need to delve into the past to gain valuable insights while also equipping you with tools to thrive in the present.

In our sessions, we'll explore your history to uncover the roots of your experiences and behaviors, and we'll also incorporate techniques from behavioral models like DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) to address current challenges. Re-telling your story empowers you to create a new one, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your patterns. Your experiences are important, and they deserve to be heard and validated.

Understanding your attachment style can be incredibly enlightening. It helps to uncover the patterns, struggles, and behaviors that you encounter in both your relationships and your personal life. These insights provide you with the knowledge and, consequently, the power to take control of your life and make the changes you desire.

I would describe myself as a more laid-back therapist with a good sense of humor and a fun personality. This approach has proven to be an effective skill in building rapport and fostering a comfortable, safe environment for my clients. I am grateful to have the ability to make everyone feel at ease and secure in my presence. In my practice, you will find a judgment-free zone where you can freely express yourself and explore your journey toward healing and self-discovery.

What you can expect from sessions with Avigail Teiler, LMSW

My primary goal is to understand you and what you, or your child, hope to gain from therapy. It's perfectly okay if you're not sure about the answer yet. Together, we'll talk through it and uncover what has drawn you to explore more about yourself.

Our sessions will be a collaborative journey where we delve into your motivations and aspirations. We’ll work together to identify your goals, whether they are clear from the outset or emerge over time. My approach is designed to empower you, helping you take control of your life and navigate through the challenges you face.

You can expect a supportive and non-judgmental environment where your experiences and feelings are validated. We'll explore your past and present to gain a comprehensive understanding of your unique story. By doing so, we aim to equip you with the tools and insights necessary to foster personal growth and healing.

Ultimately, the goal is to empower you to take your life back, fostering a sense of agency and confidence as you move forward on your path to self-discovery and fulfillment.

Avigail Teiler, LMSW's experience working with the Jewish community

Growing up in the Orthodox Jewish community has given me a profound love, respect, and connection to my Jewish identity. Although I no longer present as Orthodox, this aspect of my background has both positive and negative implications in my professional field. On the positive side, many people feel more comfortable with me and less judged, appreciating that I come from the same community. On the other hand, some may feel I don’t truly "get it" because of my current presentation.

Despite this, I am humbled to say that I have been able to break down those walls fairly quickly in most cases. However, if it doesn't work for someone, that's perfectly okay! The client's comfort is paramount to effective therapy, and finding the right therapist is a highly personal process.

I have found that teenagers struggling with their identities and issues often connect very well with me because they feel less judged. At the same time, parents feel safe knowing that I am sensitive to and respectful of the cultural needs and challenges one might face within the Jewish community. My goal has always been to work within this community to better us as a whole and to destigmatize mental health issues.

I am deeply committed to this community and passionate about seeing it thrive. Through my work, I aim to foster a supportive environment where mental health is openly discussed and addressed, contributing to the overall well-being and growth of the community I love.

What my clients have to say about working with me:

  • "She changed my life in ways you couldn't even imagine... I will be forever grateful"

    AP
  • "I feel like life is finally worth living and that's saying a lot".

    SS
  • "I've been in and out of therapy for 8 years and Abby (Avigail) is the first one to understand me and really humanize me. She listened to me and made me feel human when I was in my most vulnerable place. I was so ashamed of myself and she never judged me and always treated me with dignity and kindness. Her leaving her internship (the clinic I was at) was the saddest day for me! I can't imagine finding someone as skilled as her."
