Why Dr. Benson Fox, PsyD chose to be in the helping profession

I chose the helping profession because I wanted to pass on the tools and ways of thinking that made a genuine difference in my own life. Over the years, I worked hard to develop a map of healing for myself: a clearer understanding of what leads to growth, resilience, and psychological health. Now, I have the privilege of helping others build that understanding for themselves.

One of the most meaningful parts of my work is walking alongside people during some of the most painful and isolating moments of their lives. My goal is not only to help them make it through the crisis, but also to use those moments as opportunities for lasting growth. Together, we work to remove the obstacles that keep them from living the life they want and becoming the person they are capable of being.

With God's help, I strive to be the kind of person I wish I had when I was younger—someone who offers understanding, honest guidance, and hope without judgment. Ultimately, my work is about helping people reconnect with their authentic selves, discover strengths they may not realize they have, and move toward a life of greater purpose and fulfillment. I hope to continue living as someone who gives more than he takes and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people I serve.

Dr. Benson Fox, PsyD's approach

My style is both compassionate and direct. I believe people need understanding and validation, but they also deserve honesty. My role is not simply to make you feel better in the moment, but to help you see yourself more clearly, challenge patterns that are holding you back, and develop practical ways to move forward. At times that means offering support and encouragement; at other times it means asking difficult questions or gently pointing out blind spots that may be limiting your growth.

I strive to create a relationship that feels genuine rather than overly formal. While maintaining clear professional boundaries, I show up as a real person—with curiosity, humor, warmth, and authenticity. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship itself is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes, and I believe meaningful change happens best in an environment where clients feel both accepted and challenged.

One of the core principles that guides my work is the belief that every part of us exists for a reason. Emotions and traits that people often judge or try to eliminate—such as fear, anger, shame, self-doubt, or vulnerability—are not enemies to be defeated. They often carry important information and developed for understandable reasons. Rather than rejecting these parts of ourselves, I help clients understand them, integrate them, and use that understanding to make healthier, more intentional choices.

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Every person brings a unique history, personality, worldview, strengths, and challenges. Because of that, no two therapeutic relationships are exactly alike. Rather than following a rigid formula, I tailor my approach to meet you where you are while drawing from a variety of evidence-based perspectives and interventions that best fit your needs.

Ultimately, my goal is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, strengthen your ability to trust your own judgment, build healthier relationships, and live in a way that is more authentic and aligned with your values. Lasting change is about more than feeling better—it is about becoming freer to be the person you were created to be.

What you can expect from sessions with Dr. Benson Fox, PsyD

Every session begins with you. We'll start wherever you are that day—whether you have something specific you want to discuss or simply need help making sense of what's on your mind. My role is to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, notice patterns that may not be obvious, and help guide the conversation in a direction that is meaningful and productive.

Although I always keep your goals in mind, I don't believe meaningful therapy follows a rigid script. Instead, our conversations unfold naturally, allowing us to explore what is most important in the moment while staying focused on the bigger picture. Sometimes that means addressing an immediate challenge; other times it means uncovering deeper patterns that have quietly shaped your life for years.

You can expect both support and challenge. I will meet you with empathy, respect, and genuine curiosity, while also encouraging you to examine assumptions, confront obstacles, and move beyond the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. I will never push you faster than you're ready to go, but I also won't hesitate to encourage growth when I believe you're capable of taking the next step.

If spirituality or faith is an important part of your life, I am happy to incorporate it into our work in a way that is consistent with your own beliefs and values. If it is not, our work will remain grounded in your individual goals and worldview.

My hope is that each session leaves you with greater clarity, deeper self-understanding, and practical insights that continue to shape your life long after our conversation ends.

Dr. Benson Fox, PsyD's experience working with the Jewish community

My professional training has taken place in a wide range of settings, giving me the opportunity to work with people of many different ages, backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems. My supervised clinical experience includes thousands of hours providing counseling and psychological services through the Brooklyn College Personal Counseling Center, James A. Dever Elementary School, Lynbrook High School, George W. Hewlett High School, many group practices and clinics and the Crisis Text Line. These experiences have strengthened my ability to understand each person as an individual while appreciating the unique context in which they live.

At the same time, my personal background is deeply rooted in the Orthodox Jewish community. I was raised in an Orthodox home, educated in yeshivos, and have been an active member of the Five Towns community throughout much of my life. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Talmudic Law (BTL), spent four years learning in Israel, and am currently pursuing Semicha (Orthodox Rabbinic ordination). This combination of psychological training and extensive Torah learning has profoundly shaped both my understanding of people and my approach to helping them grow.

For many Orthodox Jewish clients, it can be a relief to speak with someone who already understands the language, values, customs, and complexities of their world without requiring lengthy explanations. Whether navigating religious questions, family dynamics, dating and marriage, or balancing personal struggles with religious commitments, I strive to provide care that is both psychologically informed and culturally sensitive.

My experience within the Jewish community also includes volunteering with Jewish crisis organizations, working with organizations serving individuals with special needs, and serving for four years as Youth Director at the Beis Medrash of Harborview. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the diversity that exists within the Orthodox community and strengthened my ability to meet people with understanding, respect, and sensitivity to their individual experiences.

For clients who wish, I am also comfortable integrating Torah perspectives and religious values into our work in a way that is thoughtful, clinically appropriate, and consistent with their own beliefs and goals.

  • Benson invested so much into me and really helped me come from a hard, stuck place and get through lots of obstacles in the way of my goals and aspirations. I really felt like he genuinely cared about me and how I would turn out and it made all the difference for me. • Benson helped me improve my self-love by helping me understand that all negative aspects of myself like conflict, have a positive place. In the 6.5 months we worked together, I accomplished the goals we had set out together and I am feeling much happier and better able to work through hard times and internally sort out my negative emotions. Benson really helped me in my life so maybe he can do the same in yours.

  • In a short two months, Benson helped me improve my balance in life, especially finding a better work-life balance. We were able to build better awareness around boundaries and self-care. I am still benefiting from the seeds he planted in these and other areas. If you are on the fence, remember that there is a cost to doing nothing and not getting to your goals

  • I barely write reviews but I would like to share how satisfied I have been in having Dr. Fox in my life. It’s my first time speaking with a professional and I was truly not sure what to expect. I thought I figured out myself, my desires, my thought process especially at my age, but Benson unlocks new insights about myself that I never really considered. His approach is subtle and he keeps you accountable for what you need to work on. He checks in every day to make sure you’re on the right path. He has great availability and very affordable compared to a lot of others on the market. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for some healing from breakups, deep self-reflection, and just quality care. Mar 8, 2020 MB
