💙 Warm 💪 Challenging 👂 Listener 🥇 EmpoweringWhy Moshe Maness, LMHC chose to be in the helping profession
I chose to become a therapist because I struggled deeply with anxiety, depression, anger, and stress for many years. I know firsthand just how overwhelming it can feel to deal with these issues, especially as a man in a society that expects men to always be strong, to give support, but rarely to ask for it. There’s this unspoken rule that men should keep their struggles hidden. But I found that sharing those struggles was what actually made me stronger.
During my years teaching and mentoring troubled yeshiva boys, and later working as a chaplain in male prisons, I witnessed how powerful it can be to have someone to listen without judgment and to offer guidance without shame. I saw how many of these men were grappling with the same emotions I had faced, feeling trapped and misunderstood, yet yearning to grow and be seen for who they truly are. It became clear to me that I had a unique ability to connect and help others navigate life’s challenges.
This realization, along with my own personal growth through therapy, propelled me to make a career change. At 27, I took a leap of faith and began my undergraduate studies in psychology, eventually completing a dual master’s degree in counseling from Columbia University. Now, as a licensed psychotherapist, I work with a diverse range of clients—college professors, young professionals, and members of underserved communities—each bringing their own story and struggles. I feel honored to be part of their journey, supporting them in a way I wish I’d had when I was in their shoes.
Becoming a therapist wasn’t just about changing careers. It was about responding to a calling—a drive to help others heal, just as I have healed, and to be the support that men, and anyone else facing inner turmoil, often don’t feel they deserve to seek.
Moshe Maness, LMHC's approach
My approach to therapy is person-centered and emotionally-focused. I believe that every individual is the expert on their own life, and I strive to create a safe space where clients feel comfortable sharing what’s truly on their minds. During sessions, clients are encouraged to talk openly about their current emotions, situations that have triggered certain reactions, and even thoughts that may have popped up since our last meeting. I listen deeply, without judgment, and I aim to meet clients exactly where they are.
One of the primary tools I use is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps clients recognize and disengage from negative thought patterns that often lead to harsh self-criticism or judgment. Together, we challenge these patterns and replace them with more balanced and compassionate perspectives. I also incorporate mindfulness practices to help clients tune into their emotions and physical sensations, fostering a keen sense of self-awareness. This awareness becomes a powerful tool in better understanding their reactions and making more intentional choices in the future.
I place great importance on aligning my clients’ lives with their values and what truly matters to them. Therapy is not just about symptom relief; it’s about living more authentically. We explore areas where there might be dissonance between how they’re living and how they want to live. I encourage clients to reflect on deeper, existential questions about their purpose and what it means for them to feel truly fulfilled.
Ultimately, my goal is to guide clients toward greater self-acceptance and to empower them to live a life that feels aligned, meaningful, and true to who they are.
What you can expect from sessions with Moshe Maness, LMHC
Are you feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or weighed down by anxiety and depression? Maybe you’re tired of struggling to get things right and just want some relief. Deep down, you know that life doesn’t have to be this way. You deserve better, and you deserve to work with someone who truly understands what you’re going through.
As a licensed therapist, I am dedicated to helping people like you tackle difficult emotions, whether it’s depression, anxiety, anger, or stress. Together, we’ll explore what’s keeping you stuck and begin to untangle those knots. I’ll guide you through relaxation techniques to help calm your mind and body, and we’ll work on identifying the problematic thoughts that lead to self-criticism and feeling overwhelmed. But it doesn’t stop there. We’ll also look at practical behavioral and lifestyle changes that can bring more balance and control into your life.
My goal is for you to walk away from our sessions feeling empowered and capable of managing your emotions. Over time, you’ll start to notice a shift in your mindset. You’ll begin to think, *I can handle stress. I can face my anxiety without it limiting me. Depression doesn’t have to define my life. And anger no longer controls me.* You’ll feel more confident, calm, and free to live life on your terms—without being weighed down by the heaviness of your struggles.
Working with me means having a partner committed to seeing you succeed, no matter how long you’ve felt stuck. Because you’re not just here to get by—you’re here to thrive.
Moshe Maness, LMHC's experience working with the Jewish community
I was born and raised in the Chabad community of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. From a young age, I was taught to value every person and to see the inherent worth in every Jew, no matter their background or level of observance. This mindset has guided me throughout my life and work—first as a teacher, then as a prison chaplain, and now as a therapist.
My identity as a Jew comes first and foremost, shaping how I see the world and connect with others. I am a Jew first, a human second, and a therapist third. Being an Orthodox Jew myself, I understand the unique challenges that come with navigating religious and cultural expectations. I know how complicated it can be to balance personal needs with communal responsibilities and how difficult it can be to make space for mental health in a world that often prioritizes external appearances over internal struggles.
When I work with clients from within the Jewish community, I begin by listening deeply, being fully present to their individual experiences, values, and needs. Each client is unique, and I tailor my interventions accordingly, whether it’s understanding the weight of religious guilt, navigating family dynamics, or addressing spiritual questions that can feel too heavy to carry alone. From one Jew to another, I approach each person with compassion and a strength-based perspective, focusing on their resilience and the strengths they already possess.
As Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of the Chabad movement, taught: “A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness.” My goal is to help each client find and nurture that light within themselves, guiding them toward healing, growth, and a life that feels aligned with who they truly are.

Working with Moshe fantastic. As someone who has never gone to therapy before, he was very good about introducing me to the process surrounding therapy and helped me figure what my goals should be and how to attain them. He listened intently to the issues I was facing and recommended me solutions that were very effective as we continued our appointments. As a result, working with Moshe was a remarkably positive experience for me. For anyone seeking help related to anxiety and worry issues, I would highly recommend Moshe to help.

Moshe is simply great. I’ve been speaking with Moshe for almost three years now. Prior to meeting Moshe, I had two other doctors but they weren’t a perfect match for me. Moshe has taken the time out to really hear me out and offer adequate options on how I can progress through my problems. Moshe is up to date and current with trends pertaining to a younger crowd. He is modern and nonjudgmental. This makes talking to him much easier because he can easily relate and empathize with me. Moshe also truly cares about my personal progress because he always encourages me and makes sure I am staying on my path. He listens and remembers everything I say. For example, if I reference a situation that happened two years ago, I do not need to reexplain myself because Moshe remembers the full details. Moshe has stayed a consistent part of my life, even during the pandemic by offering phone and video appointments. Moshe is very easy to talk to and has a sort of gentle approach to any problems I may be experiencing.

I have been working with Moshe since 2019 and he has helped me with a number of critical issues. Although technically he was in training when we first worked together he has a maturity, professionalism and insightfulness that you would associate with a therapist of many years experience. I get the impression he tailors his approach to each client; with me he is not afraid to explore the theoretical side of therapy knowing that I'm an educator by trade. That said, he is no "nerd" when it comes to therapy, as his approach is very pragmatic. He is also not afraid to take the bull by the horns if he senses the client is not grappling with the problem at hand. Moshe is a natural at his vocation and it is a privilege to be his patient.
