Why Ari Lewis, LMHC chose to be in the helping profession

Though I now identify as basically Conservative Jewish, my roots are deeply Orthodox. My upbringing was steeped in tradition, and it shaped much of who I am today. My mother, a woman of immense compassion and resilience, decided to pursue a degree in social work when I was just 12 years old. It was a bold move, especially within our community, where such paths weren't always the norm.

That summer, she faced a challengeā€”one of her classes was scheduled during the Sabbath. Rather than miss it, my dad and I decided to make a weekend out of it. We booked a hotel close to her school, ensuring she could attend her class while still observing the Sabbath. With not much to do on those quiet Saturday afternoons, I accompanied her to one of her classes.

Sitting in that classroom, surrounded by discussions of empathy, understanding, and healing, something clicked. I was captivated by the idea that listening and guiding could be so transformative. In that moment, I realized that I, too, wanted to be a therapist. The seed was planted, and from that day on, I knew that the helping profession was where I was meant to be.

Ari Lewis, LMHC's approach

In my practice, I blend both structured and flexible approaches to meet the unique needs of each client. With a master's degree in positive psychology and advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I draw upon these methodologies when a more structured framework is needed. These tools are particularly effective in helping clients navigate specific challenges and develop actionable strategies for change.

However, therapy is not one-size-fits-all. My years of hands-on experience in psychodynamic and relational approaches allow me to take a more fluid, intuitive path when the situation calls for it. These approaches help me to explore the deeper, often unconscious, layers of my client's experiences, facilitating a more profound understanding of their emotional landscapes. By balancing both structured and unstructured methods, I aim to create a therapeutic environment that is both supportive and adaptable, tailored to each client's journey toward healing and growth.

What you can expect from sessions with Ari Lewis, LMHC

I take my work very seriously, which is why I make a conscious effort to not take myself too seriously. Therapy is a journey that requires balanceā€”sometimes you'll need to cry, and other times, laughter will be the best medicine. This space is designed for your healing and growth, where every emotion has its place and purpose.

The most essential ingredients for true healing are warmth and play. I believe that genuine connection and a sense of lightness are crucial to the therapeutic process. Our sessions will be filled with both, creating an environment where you can feel safe to explore your inner world while also finding moments of joy and relief. You can expect our time together to be a mix of deep, meaningful work and the kind of playful moments that remind us of the beauty in our shared humanity. Ultimately, my goal is for you to leave each session feeling more understood, supported, and ready to continue your journey of growth.

Ari Lewis, LMHC's experience working with the Jewish community

My journey in working with the Jewish community has been rich and varied, spanning different roles and settings. I began by teaching at an Egalitarian Jewish Sunday (and Tuesday) school, where I had the privilege of helping young minds explore their heritage and values. It was a fulfilling experience that deepened my connection to the community and honed my skills in creating meaningful educational experiences.

As my career evolved, I transitioned from teaching children to mentoring future social workers as a faculty member at Touro University's School of Social Work. Guiding graduate students has allowed me to share my knowledge and passion for the field, helping to shape the next generation of professionals who will continue to serve and support our community.

In my practice, about half of my clients are Jewish, and another quarter are non-Jews in committed relationships with Jewish partners. This diverse clientele has given me a unique perspective on the challenges and joys that come with navigating Jewish identity, culture, and interfaith relationships. My work is deeply informed by an understanding of the cultural nuances and values that are central to the Jewish experience, and I am committed to providing a supportive and informed space for all my clients, regardless of their background.
