Why Chananya Abraham, MA, MS, LPC chose to be in the helping profession

I did not go into the helping profession to sit in a chair, nod politely, and hand out recycled advice that someone could find on a coffee mug. I went into this work because I care about what is real underneath the surface, not just what is easy to say out loud. I have always been drawn to that place where pain, meaning, family, faith, and identity all collide, where things feel complicated and hard to name. Over time, I saw clearly that people are not falling apart because they are weak, but because they are lonely, misunderstood, disconnected, and carrying stories they were never properly helped to make sense of. What I try to do is help people put language to what they are feeling, strength to what they are facing, and some direction to where they are going, in a way that actually feels grounded and honest.

More than that, I chose this profession because I believe people are capable of more than just surviving their lives. I believe families can break patterns that have been stuck for years, sometimes generations, and that parents and children can learn to like each other as much as they love each other. I do not see pain as something that has to become a life sentence, even when it has been there for a long time. I believe faith can heal, communication can reconnect what feels distant, and growth can be both honest and deeply human without losing who you are. This is the work I feel called to do, and I try to show up to it with enough warmth and a bit of humor, so that healing feels possible and human, not like something rigid or forced.

Chananya Abraham, MA, MS, LPC's approach

My approach to therapy and coaching is honest, practical, and deeply relational. I help people slow down enough to really understand what is happening beneath the surface, not just what is easiest to point to in the moment. That might look like anxiety, trauma, miscommunication, spiritual tension, or old family patterns that keep showing up in new clothes, even when someone is trying to do things differently. We take the time to make sense of those layers, so that what feels overwhelming or confusing starts to become clearer and more workable. The goal is not just insight for its own sake, but a kind of understanding that actually changes how someone experiences themselves and their relationships.

I am not interested in offering generic advice or quick fixes that sound good and change very little. I want to help people build real self-awareness, stronger communication, and a more grounded connection to who they are, what they value, and how they want to live. Whether I am working with a parent, a teenager, or an adult trying to get unstuck, I meet them where they are and work at a pace that feels honest and sustainable. My focus is on helping people feel more steady, more clear, and more capable of moving forward with intention. When that happens, growth feels less like pressure and more like something that actually fits their life.

What you can expect from sessions with Chananya Abraham, MA, MS, LPC

What you can expect from our time together is honesty, depth, and real work. I am warm, but I am not passive, and I will not sit back while we circle the same ground without moving forward. I listen carefully and take seriously what is happening beneath the surface, not just what is easy to say out loud. Part of my role is to help you make sense of your experience, and part of it is to challenge you when something needs to be seen more clearly. The work is collaborative, but it is also active, and I show up engaged in helping you get somewhere meaningful.

I am not here to fill sessions with generic advice, empty reassurance, or week after week of talking in circles. I want to help you understand your patterns, communicate more clearly, take responsibility for what is yours, and stop blaming yourself for what is not. Some sessions will feel relieving, others may feel confronting, and some might stay with you long after we are done. That is often where the deeper work starts to take hold. If you are willing to show up honestly, I will meet you there, and together we will work toward clarity, stronger relationships, and meaningful change that actually holds up outside the office.

Chananya Abraham, MA, MS, LPC's experience working with the Jewish community

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working closely within the Jewish community, supporting individuals, couples, parents, and families as they navigate the complicated realities of trauma, relationships, religious struggle, and spiritual pain. Much of this work has involved sitting with people who care deeply about their faith and their community, while also carrying hurt that came from within those same spaces. Sometimes that hurt comes from silence, sometimes from misunderstanding, and sometimes from expectations that were never clearly named but felt deeply. I try to meet people in that tension with respect for both their values and their lived experience, without minimizing either. The work often begins by making room for what has not been said out loud and helping it take shape in a way that feels honest and steady.

I have worked with clients facing generational trauma, family conflict, shame, anxiety, religious confusion, and a sense of spiritual disconnection that can feel both isolating and disorienting. My approach is not to push people toward easy answers or force them into a choice between honesty and belonging. Instead, I try to help them make sense of their experiences in a way that allows for both truth and connection to exist at the same time. The goal is to create a space where people can think clearly, speak openly, and do the deeper work of healing without feeling like they have to hide parts of themselves. From there, it becomes possible to reconnect to what feels sacred in a way that is real, not performative, and not built on pretending the pain never happened.

Chananya Abraham, MA, MS, LPC's Book Recommendation Zone

  • Man's Search For Meaning
powerful and deeply human book about suffering, survival, and the search for purpose, written by Viktor Frankl based on his experience in Nazi concentration camps. Its central message is that even when a person cannot control what happens to him, he can still choose his response, and in that choice he can find meaning, dignity, and the strength to keep going.
  • Atomic Habits
practical book about how small, consistent actions shape your life far more than big dramatic changes. Its core message is that real transformation comes from building better systems, not just setting better goals.
  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F...
a blunt, no-nonsense book about choosing what actually matters and letting go of the rest. Its main point is that a better life does not come from avoiding problems, but from caring about the right things and taking responsibility for how you face them.
