Why Toby Tannenbaum, LCSW chose to be in the helping profession

My fascination with understanding the depths of the human mind began in high school. I remember being captivated by the questions that so many of us grapple with—why do people struggle the way they do? How much control do we truly have over our thoughts? And how do those thoughts shape the way we move through the world? Beyond that, I was (and still am) deeply intrigued by the impact of our formative attachment styles on our relationships. I often wondered: Can attachment wounds truly be healed? Is it possible to rewrite the patterns we’ve carried since childhood?

As I continued to grow, both personally and academically, I found myself drawn to spaces where I could explore these questions not just in theory, but in practice. Along the way, I was given the incredible gift of walking alongside those in pain. Sitting with someone in their most vulnerable moments, bearing witness to their struggles, and working together toward healing is something I do not take lightly. It is in those moments—when someone allows me into their story—that I, too, find myself leaning into deeper acceptance, both of others and of myself.

Being a social worker is not just a profession to me; it is a privilege. Every day, I am reminded of the resilience of the human spirit, the complexity of healing, and the power of connection. It is work that humbles me, challenges me, and fills me with gratitude.

Toby Tannenbaum, LCSW's approach

From a humanistic perspective, I see my role as helping individuals reconnect with their inner self—the part that is whole, light, and inherently capable of healing. I believe that at our core, we all possess the strength to transform, but that transformation often begins with awareness and acceptance. By acknowledging our brokenness, rather than resisting it, we open the door to deeper self-compassion—one that naturally extends outward, allowing us to accept others more fully as well.

My approach is also grounded in a trauma-informed perspective and an attachment-based lens. I recognize that healing is not just about insight but about creating an environment where clients feel truly safe—both within themselves and in their relationships. Safety fosters presence and presence allows for deeper connection, both internally and externally. Through this framework, I help clients cultivate a sense of trust in themselves and their experiences, making space for growth, healing, and ultimately, a more authentic way of being in the world.

What you can expect from sessions with Toby Tannenbaum, LCSW

With warmth, empathy, and a touch of humor, I am deeply committed to attuning to both your conscious and subconscious needs, desires, and longings. Our sessions are a space where you will be heard—not just in the words you speak, but in the emotions, patterns, and unspoken truths that shape your experience. I listen with care, seeking to understand not only where you are now but the journey that brought you here.

Together, we explore the layers of your story, gently uncovering the beliefs, experiences, and past wounds that have influenced your path. We invite your inner child into the conversation, honoring its needs, fears, and hopes, while also creating space for the person you are becoming. Through this process, we work toward clarity, healing, and a deeper sense of self-awareness—one that empowers you to step into the future you envision for yourself.

Toby Tannenbaum, LCSW's experience working with the Jewish community

Theoretically, we understand that there is more that unites us than divides us. But in working intimately with others, this truth becomes deeply felt—pain, sadness, and suffering are universal. They transcend backgrounds, beliefs, and identities, leaving no space for judgment or criticism—only for empathy, love, and understanding.

As a native Yiddish speaker, I bring not only language fluency but also cultural sensitivity and deep respect for the unique experiences within the Jewish community. My culturally competent approach allows me to create a space where clients feel truly seen, understood, and safe. Whether navigating personal struggles, intergenerational trauma, or the complexities of faith and identity, I strive to provide a therapeutic environment rooted in compassion, connection, and healing.
