🥇 Empowering 💭 Open minded 🌎 Holistic 🐣 Out of the boxWhy Dr. Diana A Harman, LMHC-D, PhD chose to be in the helping profession
Helping others has always been a part of who I am. I have long been drawn to understanding people—their stories, their struggles, and the ways life experiences, family systems, and culture shape who they are. Choosing to become a mental health counselor felt less like a career decision and more like stepping into my purpose. I am continually inspired by the courage and resilience I see in the people who seek support, and I am committed to creating a space where you can explore your experiences safely, without judgment, and at your own pace.
I am a licensed mental health counselor and a doctor of mental health counseling, and I have the privilege of walking alongside individuals as they navigate healing, growth, and self-understanding. My approach is deeply person-centered and trauma-informed, with a particular focus on intergenerational trauma. My doctoral research explored how trauma is carried across generations and expressed through communication patterns, family dynamics, and cultural context. This perspective allows us to examine not only your lived experiences, but also how family history, community, and broader cultural narratives may be influencing your present life.
I have also researched therapeutic engagement within the Jewish community, focusing especially on working with Orthodox Jewish teenage girls. This work deepened my understanding of how culture, identity, values, and community dynamics shape therapy, and reinforced the importance of clients feeling seen, respected, and understood in culturally meaningful ways. Therapy with me is not about fixing you because you are not broken. It is about understanding your nervous system, honoring the ways you learned to survive, and building insight, self-compassion, and lasting change.
Together, we work toward healing that feels empowering, sustainable, and aligned with who you are. My goal is to help you cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself, navigate challenges with confidence, and access the resilience and wisdom that already exists within you. Every session is an opportunity to explore, reflect, and grow in a way that honors your story and supports your unique path forward.
Dr. Diana A Harman, LMHC-D, PhD's approach
I take an eclectic, person-centered, and trauma-informed approach to therapy, drawing on a wide range of modalities and creative techniques to meet each client where they are. My training includes EMDR, somatic experiential therapy, ARC, play therapy, ERP for OCD, motivational interviewing, and strategies for working with ADHD and learning differences. I also integrate advocacy-informed approaches and specialized training in supporting clients navigating antisemitism-related stress, cultural challenges, or identity-based experiences. This allows therapy to feel both personalized and deeply attuned to your unique needs and context.
I believe that everyone has the potential for growth, resilience, and self-understanding. Therapy is a collaborative process where we explore patterns, honor your experiences, and use the tools, exercises, and creative methods that best support your progress. Whether through conversation, experiential exercises, play, or skill-building, my goal is to create a space where you feel seen, understood, and empowered. Together, we work toward healing, insight, and strategies that help you not just cope, but thrive in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.
What you can expect from sessions with Dr. Diana A Harman, LMHC-D, PhD
From the very first session, I take great care to listen deeply and with compassion to each client’s unique story, creating a space that feels safe, respectful, and confidential. I work with individuals and families in high-profile or high-pressure careers, including children and adults, and understand the discretion and sensitivity these situations require. Together, we thoughtfully develop a personalized, trauma-informed treatment plan that honors both professional responsibilities and personal well-being, ensuring therapy feels practical, relevant, and supportive.
My commitment is to foster emotional growth, resilience, and self-awareness, empowering clients to navigate life’s complexities with confidence and balance. Therapy with me focuses on understanding patterns, building insight, and strengthening coping skills that translate beyond the office. I aim to support each client in cultivating a sense of ease, clarity, and empowerment, helping them thrive not just in their careers, but in all aspects of life that matter most to them.
Dr. Diana A Harman, LMHC-D, PhD's experience working with the Jewish community
As an Orthodox Jew, I have had the privilege of engaging with many parts of the Jewish community throughout my life, both personally and professionally. When I began my degree in mental health counseling, I felt inspired to focus on supporting the Jewish community, particularly around intergenerational trauma and the experiences of grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. My research has also explored experiences of antisemitism, examined how these experiences compare across different Jewish individuals, and studied therapeutic engagement among Orthodox Jewish teenage girls. These experiences have shaped my understanding of how culture, identity, and history influence both the challenges we face and the paths toward healing.
Beyond research, I have been actively involved in advocacy and support initiatives, including training in GUARD techniques and participating in Gesher to support Jewish students in college navigating antisemitism. I have also worked to promote cultural awareness and inclusion within counseling professional groups, helping ensure that the unique needs of the Jewish community are recognized and respected. I believe that every Jew has their own story, and that each person deserves the space to share their experiences and define what Judaism means to them. My work is grounded in cultural understanding, respect, and the belief that healing and growth are possible when your story is truly honored.
Dr. Diana A Harman, LMHC-D, PhD's Book Recommendation Zone
- The Body Keeps the Score
The Body Keeps the Score is a book I often recommend because it clearly explains how trauma lives in both the mind and the body. It helps people understand why they may still feel anxious, on edge, or disconnected long after an experience has passed and why we cant just "get over it" What I appreciate most is how thoroughly it shows the connection between the nervous system, emotions, and physical responses, and why healing often requires more than just talking. The book validates that these reactions are not personal flaws, but the body’s way of trying to stay safe. - Mastering Your Adult ADHD: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program, Client Version
Adult ADHD is something I have found to be common in my office usually adults believe that this problem only fits children however throughout our work together I have found that those with ADHD have benefited from practical advice within this book. - Man's Search for Meaning
