I chose to pursue a career in the helping professions because I am motivated by genuine connection, the desire to reduce suffering, and the hope of supporting others on their paths to fulfillment. My early fascination with life at its smallest scales, combined with a longing to make a meaningful impact, led me to study Cellular and Molecular Biology. That foundation naturally evolved into a career in medicine, where I found an even deeper sense of purpose in caring for people in moments of need.
Before moving into the field of mental health, I trained and practiced in Emergency Medicine. I was drawn to the specialty because of the unique opportunity to understand life through a wide range of patient stories, each one offering insight into the resilience and vulnerability of the human condition. Over time, I began to recognize a significant systemic gap in mental health care. Through my work in the emergency department, I also became increasingly interested in the emerging research on ketamine, a medication I had often used in clinical practice, and its potential in treating depression.
At Ember, I am grateful to bring my Emergency Medicine experience into the mental health space, where I administer ketamine treatments for those suffering from depression. What is most meaningful to me in this work is the chance to connect with patients as people, not just as diagnoses, and to walk alongside them in their healing journeys. I also value being part of an organization that not only provides care but also helps to lead a broader paradigm shift in how we approach mental health treatment.
Anya Karpov, MD, MBA's approach
I take an evidence-based and patient-centered approach to care, always keeping the individual at the heart of treatment. Each patient receives a personalized care plan that is tailored to their needs, designed to help manage depressive symptoms in a thoughtful and effective way. My team and I closely monitor patient outcomes and mood, which allows us to recommend when it may be the right time to return for treatment if symptoms begin to recur. This ongoing attention ensures that care remains both proactive and responsive.
Because of our clinic’s location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I have had the privilege of working with members of the Orthodox and Chasidic communities. It has been a true honor to earn their trust in pursuing ketamine treatment, a therapy that many describe as not only deeply healing but also spiritual in nature. Witnessing patients experience both relief and renewed perspective through this treatment continues to inspire me.
I also believe strongly in a collaborative approach to care. I see myself as a partner in my patients’ healing journeys, not only with them but also with their broader care teams. I make it a priority to keep other providers updated on how our shared patients are responding to treatment, and I value open communication about any changes that may arise. This coordination allows us to work together seamlessly in support of each patient’s overall well-being.
What you can expect from sessions with Anya Karpov, MD, MBA
When beginning treatment, we start with an orientation visit where you will meet me and the team, get comfortable in the space, and have a chance to ask any pressing questions. This visit is designed to help you better understand what to expect from care and may take place right before your first infusion or in the days leading up to it. My goal is to ensure that you feel informed, supported, and at ease from the very beginning.
During every session, I make it a priority to ensure your safety and comfort, both physically and psychologically. You will have your own private infusion suite with dedicated 1:1 medical monitoring as well as ongoing psychological support throughout the appointment. Before we begin the infusion, I will work with you to establish a supportive mindset by setting an intention and, if you’d like, creating a custom ritual that can include aromatherapy and music. These small details help create an environment that feels grounded and personal to you.
Each appointment lasts about 90 minutes, with the infusion itself running for 40 minutes. During the infusion, you will wear headphones and eyeshades to encourage an inward, reflective state of mind. When it concludes, I will gently guide you out of the experience and hold space for you to share anything meaningful that surfaced, or simply sit in quiet reflection. There is no expectation — only support. Many of my more religious patients have shared that these moments brought them a sense of spiritual closeness to G-d, and I welcome those reflections whenever they arise.
At the end of each session, I will medically clear you and then invite you into our recovery area, where you are welcome to take your time with a cup of tea, journaling, or reading. Once you feel steady, clear, and ready to continue your day, you will be free to leave, knowing you have been cared for in a safe, compassionate, and respectful environment.
Anya Karpov, MD, MBA's experience working with the Jewish community
My extended family emigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union when I was a young child, seeking asylum from Jewish persecution. The kindness and generosity of the Jewish community made it possible for us to establish roots in this country, and I carry deep gratitude for the support we received during that time. Without the many Jewish organizations that guided us, we would not be where we are today, and that experience continues to shape my commitment to giving back.
My connection to the Jewish community has remained strong throughout my medical career. During residency training at Maimonides Medical Center, I treated patients from the Chasidic community of Boro Park every day and became familiar with many of their religious and cultural traditions. I have also had the privilege of working alongside Hatzolah and collaborating closely with Jewish physician colleagues and nurses. These experiences further reinforced the importance of cultural sensitivity, something I hold as a cornerstone of my practice.
At Ember, my team and I are dedicated to creating an environment where every patient feels respected, understood, and safe. I have had the honor of treating people from all walks of life, including adolescents, parents, artists, CEOs, and individuals across the spectrum of the Jewish diaspora. Our clinic has been recognized not only for the evidence-based care we provide, but also for the warmth, beauty, and sense of safety that patients and partnering mental health clinicians consistently highlight.
