Why Jennifer Mesrie, MD chose to be in the helping profession

My path to psychiatry grew out of both an intellectual fascination with the human mind and a deeply personal appreciation for the complexities of emotional suffering. Recognizing early on the profound, often invisible weight that people carry privately awakened a sense of compassion that continues to drive my work today.

While a love of biology initially drew me to medicine, it was my genuine curiosity about people, their stories, and their inner worlds that ultimately led me to psychiatry. I discovered how deeply meaningful it is to walk alongside people through some of the most vulnerable and challenging periods of their lives, offering both clinical expertise and genuine human connection.

Psychiatry allows me to bring together the rigor of medical science with the profoundly human experience of caring for others. I consider it a privilege to be entrusted with my patients' stories and to partner with them as they navigate suffering, uncover new perspectives, and find greater freedom and possibility in their lives.

Jennifer Mesrie, MD's approach

My approach brings together medical science with a deep understanding of the person behind the symptoms. I believe that understanding someone's mental health requires looking beyond a diagnosis and considering the many factors that have shaped who they are. This includes biology and brain chemistry, but also upbringing, relationships, culture, personal history, and the experiences that have influenced how they see themselves and the world around them. I want to understand not only what someone is experiencing today, but also how they arrived at this point and what might be contributing to their current struggles.

I'm particularly interested in understanding how patterns develop, including ways of coping that may once have helped us through difficult experiences but no longer serve us. I believe that a trusting, genuine relationship is central to meaningful change, and my style is warm, engaged, curious, and direct. I value creating a space where we can explore difficult experiences honestly, ask questions, and develop a deeper understanding of what may be getting in the way of feeling better. When medication is appropriate, I prescribe thoughtfully and carefully, considering the scientific evidence alongside your individual needs, preferences, and quality of life. Whether through psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both, my goal is to alleviate suffering while helping you develop greater self-understanding, emotional flexibility, and the freedom to live more fully.

What you can expect from sessions with Jennifer Mesrie, MD

We begin with an in-depth assessment, taking time to explore your history, current concerns, and the different factors that may be affecting your well-being. I want to understand your experiences in context, rather than focus only on the symptoms that brought you to seek help. I may ask questions you haven't been asked before or help you connect pieces of your experience in ways you hadn't previously considered. Sometimes, looking at familiar experiences from a different perspective can open the door to a better understanding of what you're going through. Together, we'll work toward a fuller picture, drawing on both your personal perspective and my clinical expertise.

As we move forward, I'll help you understand your experiences through a psychiatric lens and walk you through the available treatment options, including their potential benefits, limitations, and risks. I believe it's important that you feel informed and involved in decisions about your care, so I'll offer my clinical recommendations while respecting your values, preferences, and autonomy. We will work collaboratively to identify an approach that makes sense for you and your individual circumstances. My role is to bring expertise, perspective, and ongoing support to the process, while making sure your voice remains central throughout. Ultimately, our work together is focused not only on addressing what is causing you distress, but also on improving your mental health and quality of life.

Jennifer Mesrie, MD's experience working with the Jewish community

My understanding of Jewish life is both personal and professional. Growing up in a Sephardic Jewish family, attending Yeshivah of Flatbush and Jewish summer camps, and maintaining a lifelong connection to Israel have given me a deep familiarity with the traditions, values, and complexities of Jewish identity. These experiences have helped me appreciate the many ways that Jewish upbringing and community can shape a person's sense of self, relationships, and expectations. I understand the unique pressures that can accompany a dual-curriculum education, close-knit communities, strong family expectations, and the sometimes complicated relationship between individual ambition and communal belonging. At the same time, I deeply appreciate the richness, warmth, and sense of connection that these communities can provide.

My professional experience has further shaped my understanding of the different experiences within the Jewish community. During the early COVID-19 pandemic, I provided psychiatric care to members of Footsteps, an organization supporting individuals transitioning out of ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. I have also conducted research exploring the mental health experiences of individuals leaving the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. These experiences have given me an appreciation for the complexity of navigating questions of identity, belonging, family, and personal values, particularly when different parts of one's life may feel difficult to reconcile.

Because Jewish identity and observance take many forms, I recognize that there is no single way to experience Jewish life. My commitment is simple: you shouldn't have to spend your sessions translating your world, justifying your values, or explaining every cultural nuance. Whether you feel deeply connected to your traditions, find yourself questioning aspects of them, or are navigating the space in between, I want you to feel that all parts of your experience are welcome. I strive to create a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment where you can explore these experiences openly and freely, without feeling that you need to leave any part of yourself at the door.
