Dan Cohen, LMHC's style
💙 Warm 👂 Listener 💡 Solution-orientedWhy Dan Cohen, LMHC chose to be in the helping profession
Before becoming a licensed mental health counselor, I spent years working in a Yeshiva setting as a Mashgiach, providing spiritual guidance and support to students. Over time, I naturally became someone people turned to when they needed a listening ear, a trusted confidant, or simply a safe place to share what they were going through. Being present with individuals during some of their most difficult moments showed me just how powerful it can be to feel truly heard and understood. Those experiences inspired me to deepen my training and pursue a career in mental health counseling so I could offer even more meaningful support to those facing life's challenges.
My journey into this field is rooted in a genuine desire to help people feel less alone. I understand that emotional struggles can be overwhelming, confusing, and at times deeply isolating. Whether you are navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, personal challenges, or simply feeling stuck, my goal is to provide a supportive environment where you can speak openly and feel understood without judgment. I believe that meaningful growth begins when people have the space to explore their experiences honestly and safely.
At the heart of my work is the belief that healing happens within the context of a strong, trusting relationship. I approach therapy with empathy, respect, and collaboration, recognizing that each person's story, struggles, and strengths are unique. Rather than telling you what to do, I work alongside you to better understand your experiences, gain insight into patterns that may be holding you back, and develop practical tools that support lasting growth and change. Together, we can work toward greater clarity, resilience, and a deeper understanding of yourself.
Creating a welcoming and nonjudgmental space is central to everything I do. I strive to ensure that you feel comfortable sharing openly, knowing that your thoughts, feelings, and experiences will be met with compassion and care. Trust is the foundation of our work together, and I am committed to building and maintaining that trust every step of the way. Whether you are seeking support during a difficult season, guidance through a life transition, or an opportunity for personal growth, I am here to walk alongside you on that journey.
Dan Cohen, LMHC's approach
Building a strong foundation of trust is one of the most important aspects of my work as a therapist. From our very first session, I focus on creating an environment where you feel safe, comfortable, and genuinely understood. I believe that meaningful progress begins when people feel accepted as they are and know they can speak openly without fear of judgment. My goal is to provide a space where you can bring your thoughts, emotions, and experiences honestly, knowing they will be met with respect, compassion, and care.
That sense of connection and trust allows us to do deeper and more meaningful work together. When you feel supported, it becomes easier to explore difficult emotions, face challenges with honesty, and gain a clearer understanding of yourself. Therapy is not simply about addressing problems. It is about developing insight, building resilience, and creating lasting change that can positively impact every area of your life. I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership, and I am committed to walking alongside you throughout the process.
In my work, I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBT helps identify and challenge unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior that may be contributing to emotional distress, while DBT focuses on developing practical skills for managing emotions, improving relationships, increasing mindfulness, and coping more effectively with life's challenges. These approaches provide valuable tools that can help you create meaningful and sustainable change both inside and outside of therapy.
At the same time, I recognize that no two individuals are alike. Every person brings their own experiences, strengths, and goals into the therapy room, which is why I take a collaborative and individualized approach to treatment. Together, we will tailor the therapeutic process to fit your unique needs while working toward measurable growth and progress. Above all, my goal is to help you feel more grounded, empowered, and confident in your ability to navigate life's challenges and create the meaningful change you want to see in your life.
What you can expect from sessions with Dan Cohen, LMHC
You can expect our sessions to feel warm, welcoming, and grounded in a genuine sense of safety and trust. From the beginning, my goal is to create an environment where you feel comfortable being yourself and sharing openly about what you're experiencing. I believe that therapy is most effective when you feel heard, understood, and accepted without judgment. Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply trying to better understand yourself, I strive to provide a space where you can speak honestly and feel supported throughout the process.
Therapy with me is a collaborative experience. I view our work as a partnership, where your voice, experiences, values, and goals help guide the direction of each session. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I make it a priority to understand what matters most to you and tailor our work in a way that feels meaningful, relevant, and helpful. Together, we'll explore the challenges you're facing, build on your strengths, and identify practical ways to move forward.
An important part of our work will be establishing clear and realistic goals that provide focus and direction. As therapy progresses, we'll regularly check in about what's working, what may need adjustment, and how you're feeling about the changes taking place in your life. Growth doesn't always happen in dramatic leaps, and I believe it's important to recognize and celebrate the small steps that often lead to meaningful transformation over time. Acknowledging progress can help build momentum, confidence, and a greater sense of hope.
My hope is that each session leaves you feeling supported, understood, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges. Beyond gaining insight, I want you to leave with practical tools, greater self-awareness, and increased confidence in your ability to handle difficult situations. Ultimately, my goal is to help you develop a stronger sense of clarity, resilience, and trust in yourself as you move toward the life you want to create.
Dan Cohen, LMHC's experience working with the Jewish community
My work within the Jewish community has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of my professional journey. I began as a Mashgiach at Yeshiva University, where I had the privilege of working closely with students from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and levels of observance. In many ways, that role laid the foundation for the work I do today. Students often sought me out not only for spiritual guidance, but also for support during personal struggles, life transitions, and moments of uncertainty. Being able to provide a listening ear and a steady presence during those times reinforced my passion for helping others and deepened my appreciation for the power of human connection.
I later joined Yeshiva University's counseling center, where I provided therapy to undergraduate and graduate students navigating the unique challenges of young adulthood. I worked with individuals facing academic stress, relationship concerns, identity development, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties that can arise during this important stage of life. Supporting students in both educational and therapeutic settings gave me a unique perspective on the many factors that influence emotional well-being and personal growth.
My work also expanded into the broader Jewish community through my role as a therapist at Tikva, Ohel's outpatient clinic. There, I had the opportunity to work with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, helping them navigate a wide range of mental health concerns. This experience strengthened my commitment to providing culturally sensitive care that respects each person's values, experiences, and unique circumstances. It also reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are and helping them build on their existing strengths as they work toward meaningful change.
In addition, I worked as a mental health counselor in a summer camp setting, supporting children and teens in an environment that was both nurturing and engaging. Working with young people outside of a traditional clinical setting allowed me to connect with them in different ways, helping them build confidence, strengthen coping skills, navigate social challenges, and develop greater emotional awareness. It was a valuable reminder that growth and healing can happen in many different environments when young people feel supported and understood.
Across each of these roles, whether working with students, adults, children, or families, my goal has remained the same: to create a safe and supportive space where people feel heard, understood, and valued. I strive to help individuals gain insight, build resilience, and develop the tools they need to navigate life's challenges with greater confidence and clarity. It is a privilege to be part of that process, and I remain deeply committed to serving the community with compassion, respect, and care.
