Why Dan Cohen, LMHC chose to be in the helping profession

Before becoming a mental health counselor, I dedicated my days to serving as a spiritual guidance counselor (Mashgiach) within a Yeshiva environment. It quickly became evident that numerous students sought comfort by confiding in me. This realization prompted me to acquire appropriate tools, aiming to enhance my ability to offer a high level of care and support.

My choice to become a mental health therapist was driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. I had deep compassion for people. Recognizing that mental health challenges can often be isolating and overwhelming, I felt a strong calling to provide empathy and understanding.

It's not just about providing guidance but about fostering genuine connections built on trust and compassion, offering relief to those navigating the maze of their emotions. Central to my approach as a mental health counselor is a nonjudgmental stance and the commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for individuals to express themselves freely.

I understand the importance of allowing people to feel comfortable and secure when confiding in me, knowing that trust is the cornerstone of effective therapy. As a good listener, I aim to validate each person's experiences and emotions, honoring their unique perspectives without imposing judgment or bias.

This open-hearted approach enables me to forge authentic relationships with my clients, empowering them to explore their innermost thoughts and feelings with confidence and without fear of condemnation.

Dan Cohen, LMHC's approach

It's very important to me that I build a strong bond of trust with my clients right from the start of therapy. I think that clients can benefit from therapy only if and when they feel safe and at ease.

It is this connection that helps me give my clients more courage to face their problems head-on. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are some of the therapy methods I use to help my clients make measurable changes and build strength and confidence along the way.

Dan Cohen, LMHC's experience working with the Jewish community

My journey within the Jewish community has been rich and varied, beginning with my role as a spiritual guidance counselor (Mashgiach) at Yeshiva University. Here, I had the privilege of supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds, each seeking guidance and support on their unique paths.

Expanding my reach, I ventured into counseling roles at Yeshiva University's counseling center, catering to both undergraduate and graduate students. In these capacities, I provided therapeutic support to individuals navigating the complexities of academia and personal growth.

Additionally, I extended my expertise to the broader community by serving as a therapist at Tikva - the Ohel outpatient clinic. Here, I engaged with individuals from diverse walks of life, offering compassionate care and guidance as they journeyed toward improved mental well-being.

My dedication to mental health advocacy led me to serve as a mental health counselor in a summer camp setting, where I had the opportunity to support young people in a nurturing and recreational environment, fostering resilience and emotional growth.
