For much of my life, Iāve known I wanted to work with peopleāthe question was always how. When I first entered the world of healthcare, working in a group home, I was struck by the impact that simple, thoughtful interventions could have. It wasnāt about grand gestures but about seeing people for who they are rather than the illnesses or challenges they face. This perspectiveāviewing individuals as whole people and not just their diagnosesāquickly became a guiding principle for me.
In that role, I also discovered the power of a solution-focused approach, one that emphasizes possibilities and potential rather than dwelling on limitations. This mindset stayed with me, growing stronger with every step of my professional journey. Iāve always been drawn to the idea that my work could go beyond just being a job. To me, it represents something biggerāa chance to improve lives and help people realize the potential within themselves.
The helping profession offers a unique opportunity to merge purpose with action, and that is what continues to inspire and motivate me every day.
Ari Daniels's approach
The world of psychiatry and psychiatric medications is full of narratives, folk wisdom, and criticisms from every angle. While the role of the psychiatric nurse is generally well-understood, the distinction becomes less clear when the title shifts to āadvanced practice.ā This gap in understanding is something Iāve noticed time and again, and itās shaped how I approach my work.
My approach strives to meaningfully bridge the worlds of psychiatric nursing and advanced practice, integrating a humanistic, scientifically grounded, and holistic perspective with the thoughtful and precise application of psychiatric medications. I see my role as more than just prescribingāitās about fostering a true partnership with my patients. Furthermore, my approach emphasizes utilizing medications in a way that targets illness, rather than symptoms or a "checklist" approach to diagnosis and prescribing. This helps protect against over-diagnosis as well as preventing polypharmacy.
Shared decision-making is at the heart of everything I do. I believe treatment works best when patients feel empowered and understood, knowing their care is rooted in both science and genuine compassion. My goal is to ensure that every individual I work with feels that their voice matters and that together, weāre creating a plan that supports their well-being in every sense.
What you can expect from sessions with Ari Daniels
Our initial evaluations are designed to provide the time and space needed to explore your unique situation, typically lasting either 60 or 90 minutes. Follow-up appointments, tailored to your ongoing needs, are 15 or 30 minutes in length. Session length is determined based on your individual circumstances and what will best support your care.
The decision to incorporate psychiatric medications into your treatment is never taken lightly. You can expect a collaborative and supportive approach as we work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your specific goals and needs. This might mean exploring various medication options, considering recommendations for nutritional supplements, or even making adjustments to your diet or lifestyle.
Every session is rooted in the understanding that your treatment journey is as unique as you are. My aim is to ensure you feel informed, empowered, and supported every step of the way.
Ari Daniels's experience working with the Jewish community
My work with the Jewish community began 15 years ago when I was employed at a group home in Brooklyn. After graduating from nursing school, I continued this path as a registered nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in the stroke-telemetry department and later at Zucker Hillside Hospital in inpatient psychiatry. In both roles, the close proximity to vibrant Jewish communities meant that many of my patients were Jewish, often facing difficult and, at times, unimaginable circumstances.
In these settings, I witnessed how having a Jewish nurse could be profoundly meaningful for patients and their families. Whether it was providing end-of-life and post-mortem care, ensuring ligature safety checks of Tefillin, or helping non-Jewish or unaffiliated staff understand the distinctions between religious piety and potential signs of psychopathology, these moments underscored the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding.
Today, as an advanced practice nurse, Iām fortunate to continue serving the Jewish community in a more personal and impactful way. Working one-on-one with individuals in a field where clinicians are in short supply has been deeply rewarding. The opportunity to support my own community and address their unique needs has truly been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my professional journey.
