Why Shaindel Wise, LCPC, LCPAT, ATR-BC chose to be in the helping profession

I used to be a teacher and often saw my students struggling in ways that went beyond the classroom. It was difficult to watch them face challenges and feel helpless, unsure of how to give them the skills and emotional support they needed. Those experiences made me realize that I wanted to help in a deeper, more meaningful way, which led me to pursue graduate school and training as a therapist. Becoming a therapist felt like the natural next step to continue supporting young people and families in ways that teaching alone couldn’t.

In my work, I focus on helping clients build the skills and confidence to navigate life’s challenges while also providing a space to be heard and understood. I draw on my experience in education to approach therapy with patience, empathy, and a practical understanding of how stress and emotions impact daily life. My goal is to help each person I work with feel empowered and equipped to handle difficulties while also fostering their emotional well-being. I am passionate about creating a collaborative, supportive environment where growth and healing can happen at a pace that feels right for each individual.

Shaindel Wise, LCPC, LCPAT, ATR-BC's approach

My approach to therapy is grounded in person-centered values. This means that it’s not about my agenda, but about what you need in the moment. I encourage you to take the lead in our sessions while I act as both a guide and a witness. At the same time, I am not completely hands-off. When the moment calls for it, I can be direct about what needs to be said or offer guidance on the direction we might take. I also bring a trauma-informed perspective, exploring how current challenges or patterns may feel familiar from the past. Viewing experiences through an attachment lens helps me understand your relationships and emotional needs, and I work from there to support growth and healing.

I chose to specialize in art therapy, though I also value sessions where we simply talk. Art therapy is powerful because there is always some form of creative expression that resonates, and no prior skill or talent is required. It’s not about making something beautiful—it’s about having another way to express thoughts or feelings that might be hard to put into words. I also use Sand Tray as a tool when it can help illuminate experiences or feelings. Ultimately, my goal is to provide a range of approaches so each person can find what feels most helpful in the moment.

What you can expect from sessions with Shaindel Wise, LCPC, LCPAT, ATR-BC

During our sessions, I offer the opportunity to begin by grounding yourself with art if that feels helpful. Some clients enjoy starting with an icebreaker or a game to get to know each other, while others feel comfortable jumping right in. Once you feel safe, we can explore what brought you to therapy through talking, making art, or a combination of both.

Future sessions are guided by your goals and what you want to achieve in therapy. Together, we work toward these goals in a way that feels manageable, non-stressful, and supportive of your overall well-being. My approach is flexible, so each session is shaped around what you need most in the moment, helping you make meaningful progress at your own pace.
