Why Jonah Mishaan, LMHC, CASAC chose to be in the helping profession

I chose to become a therapist out of a deep appreciation of the meaningful, challenging, and intellectually stimulating aspects of helping others. But beyond these, I also do it because it’s fun! I see therapy as a dynamic space to play with new meanings and possibilities, and I try to bring that sense of playfulness to my work.

To adapt a statement from the Talmud: “I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues and most from my patients.” I’m inspired by the precious wisdom and insights I’ve gained from my patients through witnessing their vulnerabilities and resilience.

I believe that the core of what we doing here is connect as people and I'm grateful for the relationships built during this process. I’m honored by those who’ve trusted me and granted me access to the innermost corners of their hearts and minds. At times I can’t help but to be in awe, witnessing the inner healing intelligence in action. It's a special and sacred space, one which I don’t take for granted.

Jonah Mishaan, LMHC, CASAC's approach

My approach to therapy is integrative, drawing from the psychodynamic, relational, IFS, and mindfulness schools of thought. In non-technical terms, this means I focus on identifying unconscious processes and unresolved conflicts, and exploring how past experiences influence present behavior. I emphasize the therapeutic relationship, viewing it as a powerful tool for understanding and healing. I recognize the multiplicity of our psyches, and work to identify and hold space for the different parts and facets of our personalities. I promote enhanced awareness of thoughts and emotions, fostering a non-judgmental and present-focused mindset in the therapeutic journey.

I see therapy as a catalyst of creativity; it’s not only about the elimination of symptoms, but the discovery of a new person who is able to live a life with more meaning, vitality, harmony, and fulfillment. My role is to help you get in touch with that new person; the one that was always there all along.

I enjoy working with a variety of people, but some of the issues for which I have a specific interest/training in are: addiction, trauma, and dealing with loss and mourning. This may be mourning a death, or other sorts of losses such as a relationship, job, or even something more abstract. I’m also excited by the rapidly growing field of psychedelic medicine, and how these substances may be utilized therapeutically and safely.

What you can expect from sessions with Jonah Mishaan, LMHC, CASAC

I approach our sessions with the mindset of being here to listen and understand your world better. You get to decide what we talk about and focus on what's most important to you. Unlike traditional setups where someone else leads, this is a safe space for you to feel empowered. I'll support you in finding your voice and taking control of things that matter to your well-being.

And while I respect your independence, I also want you to know that our sessions are more than just a venting space to let things out. In each session I work on highlighting and developing different perspectives which will make you think or feel on a deeper level.

My goal is to help you feel better, but the path to healing isn't always smooth. We may need to face intense and painful emotions to make progress. And sometimes what you’ll “feel better” may be your own neglected feelings of sadness, anger, or fear! I'll be there to support you through it, helping you process and handle those emotions. The aim is to move toward healing and to discover a more fulfilling and meaningful way of understanding yourself and your world.

Jonah Mishaan, LMHC, CASAC's experience working with the Jewish community

I began my professional career working in a Jewish community mental health clinic, and continue to work with the community in my current practice. I work with individuals across the spectrum of religious practices, and strongly recognize the significance of spirituality in our lives. I have assisted patients in discovering their unique expressions of religion and spirituality and have often found it to be a rewarding and important part of the therapeutic process. Though I believe a religious life infused with passion and connection is more fulfilling and durable than one based on guilt and shame, I approach each person's spiritual journey with respect, and refrain from imposing my own perspective. I strive to hold a space that acknowledges the range of joys and sometimes frustrations of being Jewish and living within a Jewish community.

I actively engage in consultation with Rabbis and other community leaders, both for individual cases as well as for the broader context of community health and concerns.
