What's a life coach doing on a therapy website?

BS"D

You might wonder what a life coach is doing on a therapy website. After all, if you've read the magazines you have read that life coaches are uncertified, unsupervised, and all in all kind of dangerous.

So you might wonder, what is a life coach doing on a therapy website?

And you might have some other questions, too.

  • What do life coaches and therapists have in common?
  • In what way do life coaches and therapists differ?
  • Why would I go to a life coach if I could go to a therapist?
  • Is it true that life coaches are uncertified and unsupervised?

Well, life coaches and therapists have a lot in common.

  1. They are both invested in your success.
  2. They both partner with you to help you reach your goals.
  3. A safe attuned relationship from either a life coach or therapist can be very healing.

Life coaches and therapists also differ from each other.

  1. Life coaches are meant to be forward focused and goal oriented, while therapists often focus on going back to historical experiences.
  2. Life coaches typically go through less training than therapists.
  3. Therapists can diagnose mental health conditions, while life coaches can not diagnose or treat a mental health condition.
  4. Therapists can be covered by insurance, while life coaches can not be.

If I could go to a therapist, why would I go to a life coach?

  1. Life coaches are usually cheaper than therapy.
  2. Some people have been burned in therapy and would like to try something else.
  3. Often a life coach is less official and easier to try when you are unsure of your way forward.
  4. Life coaches could be an adjunct to therapy, working along with your therapist and/ or psychiatrists to help you achieve your goals.

And is it true that life coaches are uncertified and unsupervised?

  1. Life coaches may or may not be certified. Be sure to ask a potential life coach about his/ her certification. There are organizations like ICF and like Coach training alliance that certify life coaches and hold them to professional standards.
  2. Good life coaches and good therapists will both have supervision from a therapist or supervisor who is making sure that they are doing the best for the client. Be sure to ask any potential clinician about supervision.
  3. Good life coaches and good therapists both go for ongoing training to ensure they are doing the best for their clients.

Hashem has many messengers in this world to help you heal; so whether you choose a life coach or a therapist, may it bring you to the place of healing that you wish for!
