Asher Kelman, LPC's style

I chose this profession because it allows me to help people in a way that feels deeply meaningful. Again and again, Iām struck by how much of our inner lives remains outside of our awareness, quietly shaping how we think, feel, and relate to others. When we begin to slow down and get curious about whatās happening beneath the surface, something important starts to shift. That curiosity opens the door to a deeper understanding of yourself that often gets overlooked in the pace of everyday life.
My work is focused on helping you understand what your longstanding struggles actually mean about you, rather than simply trying to manage or get rid of them. Together, we look at these patterns with care and intention, making space for insight instead of judgment. As those patterns begin to make more sense, it becomes possible to work through them in a way that feels grounded and lasting. Over time, this process can lead to changes that feel more authentic to who you are, rather than something you have to force or maintain.
Asher Kelman, LPC's approach
I work psychoanalytically, also known as psychodynamically, which means weāll work together to help you come to know yourself more fully. Many of the patterns that shape our emotions and relationships, especially the ones that feel most frustrating or difficult to change, tend to operate outside of our awareness. They develop over time and can become deeply ingrained, quietly influencing how we experience ourselves and others. Part of the work is gently bringing these patterns into awareness, so they can be understood rather than simply repeated.
As we begin to make sense of these patterns together, something begins to shift. What once felt automatic or stuck can start to feel more open, more flexible, and more within your reach to change. Over time, youāll be able to gradually work through these patterns in a way that feels meaningful and lasting. This process creates the possibility for more freedom, more choice, and a deeper sense of agency in how you live and relate to others.
What you can expect from sessions with Asher Kelman, LPC
After considering whether your presenting problem is a good fit for psychotherapy, I will invite you to elaborate on what has brought you here and how you are hoping therapy might help. We will spend time getting a clearer sense of what feels most important to you, while also beginning to build an understanding of your experience. I may ask you to share, as best you can, some autobiographical information, particularly about your formative relationships, as these often shape how we come to see ourselves and others. This early part of the process is not rushed, but instead approached with care so that we can develop a thoughtful and grounded understanding together.
Once we have begun to form a working understanding of your current concerns and relevant history, I will invite you to share whatever comes to mind, as freely as you can. This kind of open exploration allows patterns and themes, especially those outside of immediate awareness, to begin to emerge. Over time, we can start to make sense of these experiences together, connecting past and present in a way that feels meaningful. Through this process, what once felt unclear or overwhelming can become more understandable, opening the door for deeper insight and lasting change.
Asher Kelman, LPC's experience working with the Jewish community
I have some experience working with people from the Jewish community, including individuals from the Hasidic community. Through this work, Iāve had the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the cultural, religious, and communal contexts that can shape a personās inner world and lived experience. I approach this work with curiosity and respect, recognizing that each personās relationship to their community and identity is deeply personal and often complex. My aim is to create a space where these experiences can be explored thoughtfully and without assumption.
At the same time, I remain mindful that no two experiences are the same, even within shared cultural or religious backgrounds. I try to stay open to learning from each person about what their world feels like from the inside, rather than relying on what I think I already know. This allows us to understand how your individual history, relationships, and environment have shaped you in ways that are unique to you. From there, we can begin to make sense of how these influences connect to what you are currently navigating.

What people have to say about working with me:
-
I have attested to Asher's growth as a psychotherapist and his eagerness to learn about working with a variety of clients as well as his knowledge of himself as a clinician. He is bright, sensitive to the client's concerns, aware of his countertransference reactions and how this can enhance his understanding of their experience and needs. He has a good theoretical grasp of the therapeutic process and is very open to feedback from myself and other clinicians. He has shown an ability to engage with difficult clients and how to help them remain in therapy for extended periods of time which reflects his ability to develop positive therapeutic relationships.
