I’m Fine… ummm But Am I Really? 🤔💭

We say it almost automatically.

“How are you?”

“I’m fine.”

Sometimes, we mean it. Other times, “I’m fine” is simply the easiest answer. It saves us from explaining feelings we haven't quite figured out ourselves, opening conversations we're not ready for, or admitting that something might be wrong.

But what happens when “I’m fine” becomes our default response—even when we're overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted?

🧠 When functioning isn't the same as feeling okay

You can keep up with responsibilities, show up for work, care for your children, maintain relationships, and still be struggling internally.

Sometimes distress doesn't look like falling apart. It looks like:

😣 Constantly feeling overwhelmed but pushing through anyway.

😤 Becoming irritable over things that normally wouldn't bother you.

😴 Feeling emotionally exhausted, even after resting.

💭 Having difficulty being present because your mind is always somewhere else.

🏃 Avoiding quiet moments because that's when your thoughts catch up with you.

🤐 Minimizing your own feelings because someone else seems to have it harder.

🪞 Feeling disconnected from yourself while continuing to meet everyone's expectations.

Being able to function doesn't necessarily mean you're doing well. And struggling doesn't mean you're failing.

❤️ Why is it so hard  for me to admit that I'm not fine?!?!

For many people, staying busy, being dependable, and taking care of everyone else become ways of coping. We may have learned that expressing emotions is inconvenient, that asking for help is a burden, or that we should be able to handle everything ourselves.Sometimes, we don't even recognize what we're feeling. We just know we're tired, tense, frustrated, or not quite ourselves. Over time, we can become so accustomed to pushing through that we lose touch with what we actually need.

🌿 A moment for self-reflection

Instead of automatically answering “I'm fine,” try pausing and asking yourself:

  • What am I actually feeling right now?

  • Am I overwhelmed, or have I simply become accustomed to carrying too much?

  • When was the last time I felt genuinely relaxed?

  • Am I giving myself the same understanding and patience I offer others?

  • What might I need if I didn't feel obligated to keep everything together?

You don't need to have all the answers. Even recognizing that something feels different is a meaningful starting point.

🤍 You don't have to reach a breaking point to deserve support

Therapy isn't only for moments of crisis. It can be a space to understand patterns, process experiences, identify unmet needs, and reconnect with yourself. You don't have to justify your feelings, compare your struggles to someone else's, or wait until things become unmanageable.

Maybe you're fine.

 Maybe you're managing.

Maybe you've just gotten really good at making things look okay.

It's worth taking a moment to find out which one it is.

Because there's a difference between getting through the day and actually feeling okay. 🌱
