Learning To Be

Learning To Be by Sari Balsam, LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Pain shows up in all different forms

All with one mission, one agenda

For some it’s anxiety, others ocd, depression

Molded for a purpose

Our purpose in our life

To experience and to feel it

Not to resist

To listen and understand

But mostly to be with

To sit with our experiences

To live them

We often try to run from discomfort

Flee from pain

Dash at the sight of challenge

But in this life, avoidance is an impossibility

Because growth is our purpose

And growth is only possible when there’s challenge

Running from the unavoidable breeds stuckness

Stuck in the pain and discomfort

That which we try to avoid at all costs

Learning to lean into the discomfort

Can grow a beautiful garden full of flowers, trees and thorns

A wide array of the most luscious blossoms, greenery and weeds

An endless supply of opportunity for creation

No matter where you are on the path of life

And the path of healing

One thing you can count on is the passing and softening of the intensity of feelings

When you lean into them and tolerate the discomfort

Allow yourself to be with the uncertainty, the pain, the feelings

And you will move through them

Because the waves will pass

And you will be standing atop an ocean

Riding the waves

Increasing your strength

Creating limitless capacity to love, to connect and to be.
