Why Tamara Gestetner, LMFT chose to be in the helping profession

Watching friends go through a divorce was heartbreaking. The process was long, drawn out, and full of pain. It didn’t have to be that way. I saw firsthand how communication could break down, leading to unnecessary conflict and tension. It made me realize that there must be a better way—one where empathy, compassion, and understanding are at the core of every conversation.

I felt called to help. I recognized that if people had the right support, and if communication during divorce was handled with more emotional awareness, the entire process could be smoother, less damaging, and even amicable. Divorce is already challenging without adding layers of hostility. By bringing a more thoughtful approach to the table, I knew I could help couples navigate their emotions and the logistics with less pain.

Ultimately, it's about more than just the couple—children, families, and even future relationships benefit when divorce is approached with care and respect. Helping people move through this difficult life transition in a way that fosters healing, rather than further hurt, is something I knew I had to be part of.

Tamara Gestetner, LMFT's approach

My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy and a deep commitment to supporting people through some of the most challenging times of their lives. I aim to guide my clients with grace, while encouraging them to maintain a growth mindset, even in moments when it feels hardest to do so. Throughout the process, I hold them to a higher standard—not as a form of pressure, but as a reminder of their potential and strength.

When working with clients, my goal is to help them stay grounded, keeping a firm grip on their identity, even as life shifts around them. For some, that means maintaining a sense of self in the midst of change; for others, it involves navigating an identity shift and stepping into a new version of themselves. In both cases, I’m there to provide guidance, helping them honor who they are while growing into who they are becoming.

Tamara Gestetner, LMFT's experience working with the Jewish community

I’ve had the privilege of working with couples in the Jewish community who are navigating significant relationship challenges—whether they were striving to strengthen their marriage or moving through the divorce process. In these situations, I’ve helped guide them through difficult conversations, focusing on improving communication, fostering understanding, and making joint decisions that honor both partners' perspectives.

Working within the cultural context of the Jewish community, I recognize the unique dynamics and values that often come into play. My approach has always been to help couples come to agreements faster, with less conflict, while respecting the traditions and shared experiences that are important to them. Whether it’s working through a relationship or finding a way to part with dignity, I strive to create a space where decisions are made thoughtfully and with a sense of purpose.
